Getting to Breckenridge

Whether you're driving over the Continental Divide or flying into Denver, getting to Breckenridge is part of the mountain-town experience.

Driving from Denver

Breckenridge is about 80 miles west of Denver, usually around 90 minutes in good conditions. The classic route heads up I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel and then south on Highway 9 into Summit County.

Winter weekends, storms, and holiday travel can turn that route into a much longer day. If you can, leave the city before late morning or wait until after the peak rush.

Key Route Milestones

  • Denver International Airport to I-70 W: roughly 45 minutes
  • Eisenhower Tunnel: mile marker 216, elevation 11,013 feet
  • Exit 203 for Frisco / Breckenridge on Highway 9
  • Frisco to Breckenridge: about 9 miles south

Winter Driving Tips

  • Check current road conditions on cotrip.org before you leave.
  • Colorado traction laws can require AWD, 4WD, or approved snow tires.
  • Carry chains even if you normally rely on AWD.
  • Fuel up before the mountains when possible.
